Kentucky Wildcats TV over on YouTube have posted their LSU pre-game videos. First up is Coach Cal’s press conference where he address the media followed by player interviews with James Young and Julius Randle. As usual, I’ve written up a rought transcript of the questions the media asked the coach and players, which you can find below each video.
QUESTIONS TO COACH CAL:
Cal, Julius said you guys didn’t have the focus or the fight for the first LSU game, and he said he was embarrassed by it–the guys were embarrassed by it. Do you sense that they are especially motivated playing this group again?
How much better are you compared to that first game [against LSU]?
Have you had a focus or fight issue quite to that level since that game?
Julius’ number are starting to trend back upwards–especially after the other night. What have you seen in his progress?
James told us that the first time around against LSU he heard from guys, whether it was either on this team that had played them before that LSU doesn’t play as hard as they did. He said he wants to get some payback this time around and that they’re not going to be taken lightly.
Is there talk about motivation and payback and all of that?
Cal, when you put on the tape of the first half the other night at Ole Miss, what did you see?
So you’ll live with some turnovers if it gets you at the pace you want?
Cal, is above free throw shooting as a team or just the people going to the three throw line?
Cal, what were you saying to Julius when you were making that really strange face that has gone viral on the Internet?
Have you by any chance seen the video of yourself where a taco is being inserted into your mouth?
A handful of games into it, how do you feel about the zone? You guys have been fairly effective with it.
Does it seem apocalyptic for you that you’re using so much zone?
If you had your best players here for 2 years would you do it [play more zone]?
You say you’re a better zone coach… is there anyone you have relied on or talked to to try to get better?
QUESTIONS TO JAMES YOUNG:
You don’t have pleasant memories of up at LSU? How bad was it?
Why do you think you did take them lightly [during the first match-up against LSU]?
What do you think about your zone defense, James?
Have you seen it [zone defense] improve, maybe, as you guys have practice it the last few weeks or so?
Why do you think it’s [zone defense] more effective than the man?
Can you describe the way you guys start possessions in the zone? Because it looks a little bit different than maybe a normal 2-3 at the beginning of it.
When did Cal come up with that [the way their zone defense starts], do you remember?
Have you looked at that LSU tape yet, or are you guys still just focusing on what you’re doing?
How do you do that [stop O’Bryant], James? How do you try to contain him?
QUESTIONS TO JULIUS RANDLE:
How does it happen? How did it happen that day? There’s been a handful of times that it’s happened for you guys… How does it happen that you guys don’t have the fight?
How much is a second game against them just a chance to show that you guys learned that lesson?
James just told us that he wants some payback. He’s wanting to make sure that–he said you took them lightly the first time around but that this time there’s nobody that’s going to take any of those guys lightly.
Julius, how tired are you of dissecting yourself for our benefit? You know, dissecting what you do here, there, and everywhere?
Any regrets about the life you chose [a joke based on Julius’ previous answer]?
You sort of realize that in long term, you know, whether it’s now or whether it’s the NBA draft process that your game is going to be dissected like this if you want to be that kind of an upper-level player?
