Once again, the great folks at Kentucky Wildcats TV are back with post-game YouTube videos. John Robic sat in for John Calipari to do the post-game press conference with the media. You can watch that below followed. Also, Dakari Johnson, Alex Poythress, and James Young spoke to the media after the game and there’s a video of it below as well. Lastly, I’ve typed up all the questions the media asked the coach and players. You can watch the videos to hear the answers.
QUESTIONS TO JOHN ROBIC:
John, did you guys have to reemphasize going inside in the second half and using your size?
John, Cal has talked so much about how Alex has practice and we’ve seen little flashes of it. Was tonight the best you’ve seen him play in a game so far this season?
John, the first half Cal had talked about worried about maybe being a little rusty. Do you think you were rusty, lethargic, just didn’t play well, or did Mississippi State just play that well?
John, you guys had 12 assists in the second half, you were pushing the ball a lot with the pass, you were moving the ball well… Is that the kind of stuff you focused on, the stuff you saw the last 10 or 12 days?
Coach, Alex gets a big dunk right before half and then they come down in 7 seconds and get an easy layup right before halftime. Was that kind of the story of the first half? They were just quick getting up and down the court and getting to the basket?
John, is Dakari ahead of Willie as a low post in terms of using his feet and having moves as a low post offensive player?
John, one other thing about Julius… it seemed like State was really focused on collapsing around him. Is there an adjustment you guys would like to see from him in dealing with that going forward?
John, is it a sign of James maturity in the first half–he takes 14 shots when you really need him… in the second half you don’t need him as much–he pulls back and only takes 4 shots. Is that something as a coach that you like to see?
Can you just elaborate on what Dominique gave you in the first half? It looked like he was being a little more aggressive with his shot too.
You kind of just answered my question there… but does Dominique have a full green light? He seemed kind of hesitant shooting the ball.
QUESTIONS TO DAKARI JOHNSON:
What’s the adjustment been like for you? Cal says that some matchups just aren’t fair for you to play against. How has that adjustment been?
Why do you think tonight was a game where you were so productive?
What have they been telling you to improve on to get more time?
It seemed like you had a span where you scored like 6 points in really short period of time and then you got pulled. Is this the first time in your life you scored that many points and then got to sit on the bench after something like that?
It seemed like you were really making an effort to run the court hard. Is that something you’re forcing yourself to do?
Why, Dakari, do you think you guys had all that time off–and I was expecting just a really big performance, yet at halftime you guys were behind. Why do you think that was?
QUESTIONS TO ALEX POYTHRESS:
Do you guys ever when James is pulling the trigger, pulling the trigger, pulling the trigger and it’s they’re not falling down?
How big was this one with two road games coming up?
Alex, I saw you on the bench at one point yelling at your teammates on the floor–almost like you were trying to help them get in the right spots. Is that something you’re trying to do more?
Are you more comfortable doing that now [telling guys where to be and what to do on the court]?
A lot of dunks, Alex. How does it feel to be throwing it down like that?
For you guys, you’re off for a little bit. Can you talk about a little bit of rust in the beginning, but then it all clicking in the second half?
Coach said that your confidence right now is at an all-time high. Would you agree with that, and why?
How ready were you guys to go out there and actually play a game? Just from being tired of banging against each other in practice…
You’ve gone through this SEC run before. What advice have you given the other guys about starting conference play?
QUESTIONS TO JAMES YOUNG:
Were you guys more loose in the second half today?
Was that fun though, seeing all of those lobs? You had a put-back dunk too yourself. Is that the kind of basketball you guys like to play?
Transition defense… that seemed to be a problem in the first half. How do you guys assess that and get better?
Can you talk about Dakari getting up and down the floor tonight? He got a couple of easy baskets… have you seen that in practice–him improving?
Dominique tonight had a couple of open shots that he passed up. You have some offense you could rub off on him a little bit?
James, how big was this one with two road games coming up?
When you spend 10 days in “Camp Cal” working on so many things–trying to get smooth and flui–and you come out and start like that… What is Cal’s reaction?
When you’re taking a lot of shots and missing them, do you ever… it doesn’t seem like you ever hesitate to take the next one?
