With Kentucky traveling down to Nashville, the pre-game videos have rolled in a day earlier than usual. Thanks to Kentucky Wildcats TV on YouTube, we have the videos here for you to watch. First up is Coach Cal taking questions from the media followed by Dominique Hawkins and Willie Cauley-Stein. Below each video we have written up the questions the media asked the guys. Watch the videos to hear the answers.
QUESTIONS TO COACH CAL:
About 5 minutes in, were you questioning the value of “Camp Cal” last night?
So have you thought about changing the lineup?
Is the other side of that, when you have a guy like that [speaking of Dakari Johnson and missing free throws] that you can throw it down there to–all four times he got it in 8 minutes, he put it in the basket.
How has Dakari’s game grown otherwise?
Has watching what Alex is doing one of the sort of rewarding things for you?
Cal, how is Dominique sort of handling and how do you want him to handle the way teams are just sagging so far off of him?
You said you changed the way you were running the fast break during “Camp Cal.” What did you think [about it] yesterday?
Did you make a point during the layoff of kind of advancing the ball with passes…?
What has James done to increase his rebounding?
John, what’s the idea with transition offense. Why do you emphasize that?
Tough run right now for Vanderbilt–I think they’re down to 7 scholarship players… [Coach Cal interrupts by saying “Stop! I had 7 last year–I don’t want to hear it. I could[n’t] care less. Everybody felt sorry for us last year, right? [/end sarcasm]”]
You’ve got to take another young team down there with different bench configuration and all that stuff. Do you say anything to them about that?
How’s Bradley [Coach Cal’s soon, who recently had surgery for his torn ACL] doing?
QUESTIONS TO DOMINIQUE HAWKINS:
Does it ever bother you [when you hear people say “shoot”]?
What does it sound like to you, Dominique, when you hear it [the crowd saying “shoot”]?
The first time you heard it, what was your reaction?
I think even last night even Andrew was yelling at you to shoot the ball. Do your teammates tell you [to shoot the ball] sometimes?
If your confidence getting close to where it was in high school or is it going to take a while?
What about that dunk we saw [of you] against Marcus [Lee] that came out of nowhere?
Your teammates seemed to have really celebrated that when you did it. Does that feel good to feel how those guys are happy for your successes here?
Cal said that you sort of sent a message that if you come every day and go hard that you stand out. Is that sort of what you tried to bring to this team?
It’s no secret that you guys–your size is a big weapon for you guys. So how do you get to the point where you’re shooting too many threes? Why do you get away from feeding those big guys?
What about all of these dunks? Is it surprising or were you expecting this?
How much better did that second half feel and what was it like coming out of “Camp Cal,” everybody expected you guys to sort of roar right out of the gate and it didn’t happen. What was it like with Cal in the locker room?
QUESTIONS TO WILLIE CAULEY-STEIN:
Was it a coming out party for you guys dunking it like crazy?
Can you see how that can intimidate anybody you play if you can dunk like that?
Dakari seems to have perfected the finger-roll alley-oop. Is the real difference between you and him is maybe they can’t throw him the alley-oop as high?
What do you see as the difference between the two of you [referring to Dakari Johnson]? The way you play, sort of what you bring to the table?
Have you seen him [Dakari Johnson] grow though, obviously he only had 8 minutes and scored 8 points last night. Every time you guys fed him down low he was able to get a basket.
You can be a banger too. Last night a little jawing back-and-forth when things were close early. Was that part of just trying to get fired back up to get things going back in the right direction before halftime?
Willie, how much is transition offense and defense being emphasized right now for you guys?
