University of Kentucky Basketball Roster Info
Kentucky started off the recruiting season strong then it went very slow in the Spring until they eventually ended up adding 8 new players to the team. These include incoming freshman Skal Labissiere, Jamal Murray (reclassified from 2016), Isaiah Briscoe, Charles Matthews, Isaac Humphries (reclassified from 2016), Tai Wynyard (reclassified from 2016 and joining the team in December), and Walk-on Johnny David. UK also has a JUCO transfer in Mychal Mulder.
Throughout the Fall signing period, a lot of Cats fans were very excited at all the prospects that had UK in their top 2-3 lists, and after Matthews, Labissiere, and Briscoe all signed, things looked great for the 2015-2016 season. Then along came the dreadful Spring signing period… there were 7-8 highly ranked players that all came down to UK and one or two other schools, and they all ended up not selecting UK. The Cats did manage to land an All-American JUCO transfer in Mychal Mulder during this period, but the roster still had a few gaps that needed to be filled.
Many fans started to get a little nervous about how the team would shape up, but they quickly learned not to EVER doubt Coach Cal on the recruiting trail; because along came Jamal Murray in June where he announced to reclassify and gave his commitment to the Cats. Murray made a name for himself in the Nike Hoop Summit by scoring 30 points and dishing out 6 assists, and then again with a huge performance in the July’s Pan American games where he led team Canada to a silver medal. Then in August, the 7 foot Aussie Isaac Humphries reclassified and committed to the Cats followed shortly by the announcement that 2016-2017 New Zealand commit, Tai Wynard, announced that he will reclassify and join the team this December. So while all the other top teams in the nation had their squad set in stone as soon as the Spring signing period had finished, Coach Cal did his magic and found some great pieces to finish off the upcoming season’s roster.
This class is considered by nearly all the ranking systems as the #1 in the nation (ESPN is the only major one that has them at #2 as of this writing–just behind Duke–but they haven’t updated their rosters yet with the latest additions).
